Audible: Accessibility
“We need to make every single thing accessible to every single person with a disability.”
-Stevie Wonder
An App redesign
Looking into what is already out there and learning ways we can improve with Norman Nielsen’s Heuristic Analysis is a great way to improve upon our skills.
Project Type: Heuristic analysis
My Role: UX, UI
Challenge & Deliverables
Our challenge for this project was to select an app of our choosing and identify usability violations using the Usability Heuristics and Design Process. We then needed to design solutions for these identified issues. Finally, we will present a design critique to defend our design decisions.
Understand and identify Heuristic analysis
Create style tile and UI kit.
Fix one issue and create a high-fidelity prototype
Accessibility
I chose to focus on Audible’s accessibility options based on my analysis using the 10 heuristics. I chose to focus on number ten: Help & Documentation. I found that overall that they had this great feature, however, it was not accessible to get to. I got to work and recreated it to what I felt would be better.
Accessibility
The accessbility page itself was very confusing.
It was all the same color.
Difficult to understand if a feature turned on
it opened the first category automatically so you can’t even see that there are more options.
Accessibility
The toggles were unclear. To me if it is green over the option, that means its on.. it was not for this app. So I made the adjustment to make it clear, as well as continued to use a color that people with needs could still clearly see, like color blindness. I also made them bigger so they are easier to see.
Accessibility
To get to the accessibility section, you must get through five pages to locate it. I wanted it clean and right there. I made the icon and put it in the header so its on every page starting with home. Making it far more accessible.
As a whole
This project was a great learning skill set. I currently now look at apps and websites all the time to continue to learn and grow. If you want a deeper understanding of this project please read my case study below.
