Treemendous

A app the was created with your mental health in mind. The affordable way to get you outside and healthy inside.

Creating a whimsical wellness MVP

Research shows that people who are more connected with nature are usually happier in life and more likely to report feeling their lives are worthwhile. Nature can generate many positive emotions, such as calmness, joy, and creativity and can facilitate concentration.

Project Type: iOS App

My Role: UX, UI

Challenge & Deliverables

The wellness industry is over-saturated with countless options for self-care. One of the major issues people face is finding an affordable way to develop a habit that improves their mental health.

Our challenge for this project was to design a new mobile or web app that addresses a specific wellness-related issue using the Quantitative Research and Design Process. We needed to create solutions for a native app of our choice. Finally, we’ll design an end-to-end high-fidelity prototype for a wellness app backed by research.

Set goal for their progress and profile with information relevant to their goals.

monitor progress & adopt healthy lifestyle

Rethink how users can adopt & commit to a health-improving routine.

Empathize

In our first meeting, my partner and I decided to focus on mental health as our primary concern. After conducting initial research, we concluded that this focus was the best fit for us. We found scientific evidence suggesting that spending time in nature is an affordable way to improve mental health. With this in mind, we combined our passions and conducted quantitative research to further develop an iOS native app.

Ideation

When we started the ideation phase, we took our time and aimed to generate a variety of options and iterations. We did three rounds of Crazy 8’s to brainstorm concepts. Then, we used feature prioritization to narrow down what we needed and what was most important for the scope of the project.

Creating the Roadmaps

To better understand our ideation process and refine the scope of our project, we created both a task flow and a site map. We wanted to ensure that our initial ideas would flow well and provide a smooth user experience when navigating the app.

Low-fidelity

This is one of my favorite steps because creating a low-fidelity prototype is quick and really brings the project to life. We started by each taking a section of the screens, then came together to analyze each step one by one. This ensured we followed the flow and maintained a cohesive overall design.

Mid-fidelity

We continued adding details and making adjustments as more pieces of the puzzle came together. Once we were satisfied with the flow and consistency, and felt it fit well with our process so far, we created a prototype and began user testing. We also made two prototypes to compare user preferences for setting time.

User Testing

We found that we wanted to keep the overall design more organic and keep the flow and elements more circular.

  • People wanted to be able to do quests more than just once

  • Confused in our nature tracker (button placement, and not enough context)

  • Users preferred the rolling version

  • Familiar

  • Easier to understand and use

Building The Brand

We began our branding process by creating individual mood boards. Given that nature and gamification were key elements of our app, we aimed to ensure these themes were reflected in our brand identity. We also explored typography options to find a style that resonated with our concept.

Afterwards, we collaborated to create a unified mood board that seamlessly integrated both themes. The feedback we received confirmed that this direction aligned well with our vision and felt like the perfect fit for our brand.

Style Tile

We thoroughly enjoyed crafting our style tile and designing our components. My teammate created our “mascot,” which brought me immense joy. Her drawings truly captured and embodied the vision we had envisioned. I felt fortunate to have her talent alongside me throughout this project.

Additionally, I felt a sense of pride in the badges I created. They allowed me to pour my heart into this project, contributing to its overall success.

Key Learnings

As a whole

This project has been a beautifully transformative journey for me. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. My teammate has been amazing in so many ways; she has taught me a great deal. Together, we merged our passions to create something truly beautiful.

This experience has strengthened my skills and deepened my passion for the work I do. I eagerly look forward to taking on more projects in the future.
